Last night's concert was surprisingly pretty mediocre. With that many gay men & women playing I expected the bar to be alittle higher. The average age of the members were in their late 40s early 50s. At best they played at the 9th grade level. The clarinets and saxes had an immature sound. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them are just learning. From a listener/musician's point of view, it was interesting to hear the change in sound when the band's associate conductor took the podium. He will be replacing the current conductor next year. Seemed like the band responded a lot better under his baton. After the concert I spoke to the band's president Jim Babcock. He was so happy I made it and really wants me to come to their Monday nights rehearsals. I told him that because my flute was not insured I decided not to bring it. He said he would try and find me a flute to use. I told him even if he couldn't find one I could just sit in to see how they run their rehearsals.
After the concert Jerry called and told me to come downtown to meet some friends of his. He wasn't too far away so I decided to walk...in the rain. He was with his cousin and 5 other people. His cousin should be a stand up comic. I wish I had a video camera to record her story about her wedding dress. I couldn't stay long, only about 1/2 an hour. I had to be at the comedy club at midnight.
The Gotham is a comedy club I been to a few years ago. DC Benny was up first. My first impression was, wow he's tall! Over 6' easy. He was either really tired or sick. Seemed like he was in a fog and had a hard time getting a rhythm going.
Sick and all he was still so handsome!
Tonight's show is Ave. Q.
I need to buy some clothes. I look like a Macy's Thanksgiving parade balloon.
OINK!
Tonight celebrity spotting...Brooke Shields. She was leaving the theater she's performing in and was signing autographs.
