I'm home now. My last night in NYC was nice. I went to see 'Dame Edna' an Australian Dragqueen. The show was funny, politically very left, and spontaneous. She picked on people from the audiance and even brought them on stage to read through a short skit. Before the show Jerry came over for dinner, I ordered in some Chinese. He spent the entire time talking about his mother. How she and pretty much the rest of his family are homophobic. How he feels she is being brainwashed by the church (she is a born again Christian) This is a good reason not to come out to your parents. I would rather they not know about me, and have a healthy reationship my them, then what Jerry has. After losing Mom, it's hard to listen when people talk so badly about their mothers. I would give anything to have one more day with mine...

My flight home went really nice. I had an empty seat next to me. Apparently the woman in my row asked that they block the center seat from anyone else sitting there. On my side of the aisle was a family of 4, 4 year old girl and infant baby boy. I thought oh geeze I will be insane at the end of this 10 hour flight. Turns out, it wasn't the kids who made me nuts, it was the parents. The father...up and down up and down fiddetty get something in the bag put it back pick up baby boy put him down sit next girl go back to baby boy. He and his wife kept switching seats every 20 minutes. The wife....oy vay! She said to the husband at one point....I can't help it if my children want to sit with me and not with you. She is one of those kind of women who wants other people to think she is some damsel in distress. "I can't do anything for myself" She made the husband open a bag of chips for her!...evil woman.
The kids...angels. The daughter never complained once. The baby cried alittle bit, but I had my earphones on all the time so barely heard him.

This trip was more of a social trip rather than the cultural one I had last year. I met alot of nice people. Some I'll never see again in my life, other's I'm sure I will.

Yesterday was a lazy do nothing day. I just sat around watching TV. That night I went to the Big Apple Corp gay and lesbian community band rehearsal. I sat in and played in their rehearsal. It's interesting to see how other bands rehearse. How every band has the same kind of problems. How a conductor handles a group. The first chair flute came up to me during the break and said he used to live in Hawaii in the early 90s. He is a flight attendant for Continental and was based there. He looked to be in his early 50s very distinguished. He looked like a ballet mistress.....aloof and elegant. But he was really nice and said he would love to sit in our rehearsal if he's ever back in town.
After the rehearsal I met Russell and his friend David at a bar near my apt called Therapy. Very trendy, very young. On Monday nights they have something special. Last night they had a singer Kimberly Locke. I had no idea who she was. haha..not surprisingly. She was a contestant on American Idol. Beautiful voice....

Next bar was called Posh, even closer to my apt., just around the corner. By this time Russell was RIPPED KEIA! We were sitting on the corner of the bar and this huge line backer sized guy kept bumping into Russell. It was pissing him off! Finally Russell said something to him. The guy just laughed and it made Russell even more mad. The more angry Russell got the more the guy egged him on. It was funny to see, but alittle scary because you don't now what he's going to do. Finally the guy moved away and Russell kind of settled down. Next thing we know, he disappears. It wasn't long before I told David I had to go too. I didn't want to be hung over today because I need to go shopping. It's my last full day here and I don't want it to end up like yesterday.
So....here I am, my last day in NYC. I had a really good time again this year. The shows were all excellent. I didn't see as much live music as I would have liked to though. One thing for sure....I got FAT! gross....

Last nights show was 'Dracula'.... I had no idea what this show was about. I assumed with a title like this it was going to be on the bad side. WRONG! This show was first class. The sets were amazing. Things popping up through the stage floor, actors flying through the air. Dracula changed from a white haired old man to a young black haired man in a split second. I was distracted by someone flying and didn't see how it actually happened. This show is quietly making its previews and I'm sure it will be a huge hit once people start talking about it.
After the show I went up to 103rd street to Russell's place. Its a tiny 2 bedroom just below Harlem. My studio is bigger than their apt. and cost the same amount.
We cut across central park and had dinner at an Indian restaurant. Can't go wrong with a $10 buffet. I met 3 of his friends all flight attendants for American Air. After dinner we went to the same bar we went to last week, Candle Bar. They have karaoke and a few people sang really well.
I was supposed to have met Brian and Derin later that night, but flaked again hahaha.... They kept calling but I didn't answer. I got too drunk. I passed out as soon as I got back here. They leave today so I won't hear from them in a while.

Last night's show was 'Souvenir'. Awesome show! The show is about Florence Foster Jenkins a wealthy socialite who lived in NYC during the 1940s. In her own mind she thought she was a world class saprano, but in reality she had no talent. It was a very intimate theater, only about 75 people or so. I sat in the second row. The actress who played the lead was amazing. To be able to sing so off key is not easy. I was rolling in the aisles. She sang with such passion and yet she was so off. The only distracting thing was the other actor didn't know his lines and was reading it off the piano.
The end of the play lets you hear how she heard herself sing. She sang Ave Maria, and I have to say it brought me to tears.
Here is a link to a recording of the actual Florence Foster Jenkins in all her glory... http://www.brumm.com/cards/flojenkins.html

After the show I went to dinner at small Italian restaurant. Went back to the apt and took a nap.
Later that night I went to hear the NY Phil. As usual they were awesome...

Last night I met Jerry and a few of his friends around the corner at a local bar. I had met John last year. Nice guy. We seem to be living on a parallel universe. Seems like everything that has happened to him has happened to me. We have the same outlook towards relationships and men. We are around the same age. When I met him last year my first impression was, WeHo homo with attitude. Wrong. He's alittle on the queeny side, but really nice.
Today I have 2 things going on. First I'm seeing 'Souvenir' then the Symphony at 8. Jerry and his friend from FL are looking for a haunted NY tour tonight. If they find one late enough I can join them. Something I had always wanted to do.

Last night on the way back to my apt I saw a penis pump on the sidewalk.....only in NYC! hahaha

Ok I knew this was going to happen with these two queens. Last week Brian told me to find someplace we can have Thanksgiving dinner at. So I make reservations at a restaurant I had dinner at near where I'm at. When Brian and Derin got in, Derin decides he doesn't want to come all the way uptown. (They're staying on 14th and 9th) 10 minutes away. He was irritating me from the get go. Anyway, they ended up coming uptown. After dinner we went bar hopping. After about 4 or 5 bars I was ready for my bed, not to mention it was freezing out. The last club we went to was called Esqualita. Total dive. 2 drinks was $14. Brian was getting so drunk. It's scary when he's drunk, you don't know what he's going to say. I went to the bathroom and told Brian to hold my coat. I had planned all along not to stay there long. But when I got back Brian had checked my coat and didn't want to give me my ticket. I told him. If you don't give me my ticket I'm leaving without my coat anyway. I get my coat back and leave around 12:30. At 4:30 I get a message from Brian saying Derin made him wait outside the apt. for 1/2 hour and he's pissed off. And was going back to LA.
See why I travel alone??? Good riddens!

Today I'm going shopping. I'm not answering my phone if those 2 call. Was supposed to go to a museum with Derin. That's not going to happen.

Nov 25, 2004

As predicted, I stayed in last night. It was raining and icky and I just did not feel like doing anything. I was in bed by midnight. The weird thing is I woke up at 5am. go figgah.
Today is Thanksgiving and just minutes away from the start of the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade. I just got off the phone with Brian, they just landed and are on their way into the city.

Nov 24, 2004

Yesterday I had dinner with Russell, a friend of Krissie. He met me at a Mexican restaurant just up the street from me. After a few minutes I felt like I've known him my whole life. Very easy to talk to. He was showing me pictures of his room mate and some friends and mentioned Kaninau...and I said...Thompson Mano?? They have been best friends for the past 20 years. Small world.

After dinner he walked me to the theater and decided he to see if he could get a ticket for the show. As luck would have it he got a seat right next to me for only $26. 'Pacific Overtures' is a revival of a show by Steven Sondheim. It's historical account about the first Americans to land in Japan.
BORING
I fell asleep in the first 15 minutes. If anything needed reviving it was me! The set and costumes were beautiful, but thats about all I can say about this show. Thank god I only paid $34.

After the show we went to the upper west side to a small local bar. The kind I like. Later Russell's friend Mark stopped by. Mark is flight attendant with Northwest air. He knows Brian..called him the pearl of the pacific. haha
Mark looks like a Roman statue. Tall, muscular, nice skin.....and a sissssstaahhhh.....hahaha Every other word is Mary. He's the kind of gay guy that can totally fool you. But in his element, a gay bar, theres no need to hold anything back. I had fun, got back to the apt at 3:30am.

Earlier in the day I went up to Lincoln center and decided to stop in the New York Flute center that is across the street. Phil Unger owns the shop which sells and repairs high end flutes. **danger zone** I had been emailing Phil for a few years with questions, appraisals, even arranged to have a flute sent to me for Bob Zane's son to try. This year he was in. We had nice talk. He asked about what kind of flutes I have in my "collection". And then he said, I have something you just have to try, it's a 18K gold Sankyo. He is the only person in north America selling this flute. It plays like buttah! My first time playing on gold, and it has a gorgeous fat round sound. The price...a mere $35,000. Chump change.
He then brought out a wood Sankyo. I said 'you are going to get me in trouble!'
This flute was a dream to play. Projects like sliver, but has a lush woody sound.
He even offered to sell it to me at a discount, $9000 something, the original price is $11,000. I had to pass. haha We got to talking about my Chinese wood flute and he was interested in maybe being a distributor for them.
I sent the company an email about their wood flutes and found out I paid $1200 for a flute that they are selling for only $610!!!!! Disgusting...

Tonight I am free. I had planned on going to symphony, but got so lazy. I spent the day with Michael's bf Soo Kiat in Chinatown. We had dim sum and lychee ice-cream. I just wish it wasn't pouring. Canal St. is were you can buy all kinds of stuff. I might go back there before I leave.

I might go the bars tonight, but it's highly unlikely.

After seeing last nights performance of 'Brooklyn' I have devised a new rating system, the Ms. Kiki goose bump system. 5 bumps being the best 1 being the worse. This show rated a 4.5 goose bumps. I took of 1/2 a bump because the story was little weak. The cast, 3 women 2 men, were exceptional. I recognized Karen Olivo from 'Rent' as Mimi. One cast member, Eden Espinosa, stood out. She sang the show stopper 'Once upon a time'. The style is what you hear in American Idol. Starts off soft in a comfortable octave, then soaring 3 octaves. Truly amazing talent. When the song was over she had to acknowledge the audience because they wouldn't stop clapping. Hear it for yourself: http://www.brooklynthemusical.com/ click on the music link.
This time of year all the Broadway shows raise money to help AIDs and Breast cancer. For a $20 donation I got a Playbill signed by the entire cast. I forgot to mention the couple that sat behind me. They were wearing matching fur coats, matching Louis Vuitton bags, bling bling for days. They guy had what looked like a one karat daimond ear ring. They looked like extras from the Saparno's....can we say guido?

After the show I went to a restaurant suggested to me by a girl in my band who just moved to Hawaii from NY. It is a BBQ ribs place right in Times Square. I don't know if its because it was late in the night or thats how their ribs were, but they were alittle on the dry side. Otherwise everything was pretty nice. Lots of food. I had planned on going out for a drink after dinner, but was so bloated all I could think of was sleep.

Last nights celebrity spotting was Jai from the Fab Five. He was waiting in front of the theater.

Tonight's show is 'Pacific Overture' a Steven Sondheim revival.

Nov 22, 2004

Yesterday I went to the upper west side to a flea market. I swear they had the same shit that was there a year ago! I spoke to a man who was selling old Life magazines and told him my uncle was on the cover during the war. He said if I can get the exact date maybe he can find it for me.
After the flea market I took a walk through Central Park. I just wandered around there and the next thing you know I on the east side of the park. I sat at the steps of the MET and played "what's your bio". People watching, and making up their bio's. hahaha

Last night's show was best musical Tony winner 'Ave. Q'. I had a great seat front row mezzanine. Its a show with puppets, they may look like the muppets, but these puppets swear, and have sex! haha Of all the shows I have seen in the past, this one was the most "art imitates life"~ish. A line from one of the songs was....there's a fine fine line between love and a waste of time.
After the show I picked up some Chinese food and came back here. I been feeling really tired by the early afternoon. I think I need to catch up on my sleep.

Tonight's show is "Brooklyn" a new show that's getting mixed reviews. Read mine right here tomorrow!

Nov 21, 2004

Last night's concert was surprisingly pretty mediocre. With that many gay men & women playing I expected the bar to be alittle higher. The average age of the members were in their late 40s early 50s. At best they played at the 9th grade level. The clarinets and saxes had an immature sound. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them are just learning. From a listener/musician's point of view, it was interesting to hear the change in sound when the band's associate conductor took the podium. He will be replacing the current conductor next year. Seemed like the band responded a lot better under his baton. After the concert I spoke to the band's president Jim Babcock. He was so happy I made it and really wants me to come to their Monday nights rehearsals. I told him that because my flute was not insured I decided not to bring it. He said he would try and find me a flute to use. I told him even if he couldn't find one I could just sit in to see how they run their rehearsals.
After the concert Jerry called and told me to come downtown to meet some friends of his. He wasn't too far away so I decided to walk...in the rain. He was with his cousin and 5 other people. His cousin should be a stand up comic. I wish I had a video camera to record her story about her wedding dress. I couldn't stay long, only about 1/2 an hour. I had to be at the comedy club at midnight.
The Gotham is a comedy club I been to a few years ago. DC Benny was up first. My first impression was, wow he's tall! Over 6' easy. He was either really tired or sick. Seemed like he was in a fog and had a hard time getting a rhythm going.
Sick and all he was still so handsome!
Tonight's show is Ave. Q.
I need to buy some clothes. I look like a Macy's Thanksgiving parade balloon.
OINK!
Tonight celebrity spotting...Brooke Shields. She was leaving the theater she's performing in and was signing autographs.

Nov 20, 2004

Last nights show was so funny! Mario Cantone is known for his loud over the top brand of comedy with alittle bit of homo~ness thrown in. Last night was his regular stand up routine on steroids. Bigger, better and more obnoxious.
He does a dead on balls imitation of Cher, Julia Childs and of course Katharine Hepburn. It's scary just how close he gets. I was sitting 4 seats off the aisle 3 seats from center of the first row. To my right was the quintessential gay ny'er.....mid 50s, Versace shirt over a Santa Claus belly, black overcoat with the required zebra print lining, Prada bag, and to top it all off, a Rod Stewart~ish looking ill fitted blond wig. His friend on the other hand was not as flamboyant as him, looked like a distinguished banker or lawyer.
The show started off with Mario singing a song about him being who he is....and as a prop he put a 8"x10" picture of himself over his face. When the song ended he threw the picture into the air. As it came down the people around me started grabbing for it, but it landed square in my lap! I was the envy of the entire theater hahaha.... During intermission a stage hand came out looking for the picture and as I handed it back to him he said...do you want it? I was surprised they would even ask. But than again it was a prop and he didn't intend for it to go into the audience. Well, I got a nice souvenir out of it.
During the 2nd half of the show Mario was doing a song as Judy Garland....about a boyfriend that got away being "half a homo" hahah hilarious! He sat down at the edge of the stage directly in front of me with his shoe 3" from my face! Being that close up to him all I could think was....wow he has nice skin! and I hope he doesn't sing too loud or I'll be covered in spit! I pity the people in the center aisle. I'm sure they got a shower.haha
This show was partly autobiographical. With some somber moments when he describes the death of his parents and other family members. But in typical Mario Cantone fashion, in one second, he turned it around and had us rolling in the aisles.

After the show I went down to the village to the Comedy Cellar. NY's oldest comedy club. It's near NYU and the street was completely filled with college kids. I felt like I was 90 years old. I was seated with 5 girls. I was the baby-sitter.
I was alittle star struck when I saw the comedians, most of them are on tv. As they waited to go on stage they sat on a bench right next to me! Seeing an UNcensored standup routine gives you a better feel of who these guys really are.
When it was all over and time to pay the bill, they had included me in with the 5 girls. My portion came out to $26, so I give them $30. After the drunk girls looked over the bill one said "give him the bill he's Asian he's supposed to be good at math". Ok I'll let that one pass...Then she turns to me and tries to use her "charm" to get me to pay more.....eeeeeeh...wrong. Then she goes "Come on Peter (?) I know you're rich why don't you pay for us?" The girl across from me says 'he owes more' That was it. I tossed a couple more bucks in and got up and left. What whores...

Tonight I'm going to a Gay and Lesbian concert band concert. I was torn between that and going to see this hot comic DC Benny because they were at the same time. When I called to make the reservation they said he has 3 shows and the last one is at 12:30. Faaabulous! Now I can go to both.

Tonight's celebrity spotting...Joey Slotnick, he played Jonathan Silverman's neighbor in the series "the single guy". He looked awful....like he'd been drinking for a week straight.

OK,I need to get out of here and get some groceries.

Nov 19, 2004

I just got in to NYC.....as soon as I got out of the Holland tunnel it felt like coming "home". My apartment this year is on the first floor in the rear of the building. Outside my window is an old overgrown courtyard that faces the backside of another apartment. I can see some really old stairs right outside my window that probably go down to the basement. Oh great, just the image I needed when I try to go to sleep....some vampire coming up those damn stairs and standing at my window!

Once I got settled I went over to Jerry's office and called him from the street. I told him to look out his window. He had no idea I was coming. I called him a few times in the past couple weeks, getting some info. Where his office was, what he was doing on Thanksgiving, if he was going on a trip.....

Tonights show is "Laugh Whore" a one man show with gay comic Mario Cantone. I have front row seats. I will NOT fall asleep this time! After that I'm going to the Comedy Celler to see Dave Atell from Insomniac.

I am so out of shape....After I got my luggage I got a message from Michael to call him. When I called he said "why do you sound like you're out of breath?" haha...cuz my fat ass had to drag 50lbs of bags across the street thats why!

OK I need a nap!
More tomorrow...

2 more months...

I have just about 2 months before I leave for NY. I really wasn't planning on going anywhere this year. But when Chris offered me her miles, I couldn't refuse. I only booked one show so far "Ave. Q". Money is not as plentiful as it was last year. I'll be doing the discount code thing this year for sure. Maybe see some of the lesser known shows or older ones that have been on Broadway for years...Or the off off off Broadway show. haha I didn't tell Jerry I'm coming. I'm going to surprise him when I get there. Maybe just walk into his office or something haha.
