Last nights show was so funny! Mario Cantone is known for his loud over the top brand of comedy with alittle bit of homo~ness thrown in. Last night was his regular stand up routine on steroids. Bigger, better and more obnoxious.
He does a dead on balls imitation of Cher, Julia Childs and of course Katharine Hepburn. It's scary just how close he gets. I was sitting 4 seats off the aisle 3 seats from center of the first row. To my right was the quintessential gay ny'er.....mid 50s, Versace shirt over a Santa Claus belly, black overcoat with the required zebra print lining, Prada bag, and to top it all off, a Rod Stewart~ish looking ill fitted blond wig. His friend on the other hand was not as flamboyant as him, looked like a distinguished banker or lawyer.
The show started off with Mario singing a song about him being who he is....and as a prop he put a 8"x10" picture of himself over his face. When the song ended he threw the picture into the air. As it came down the people around me started grabbing for it, but it landed square in my lap! I was the envy of the entire theater hahaha.... During intermission a stage hand came out looking for the picture and as I handed it back to him he said...do you want it? I was surprised they would even ask. But than again it was a prop and he didn't intend for it to go into the audience. Well, I got a nice souvenir out of it.
During the 2nd half of the show Mario was doing a song as Judy Garland....about a boyfriend that got away being "half a homo" hahah hilarious! He sat down at the edge of the stage directly in front of me with his shoe 3" from my face! Being that close up to him all I could think was....wow he has nice skin! and I hope he doesn't sing too loud or I'll be covered in spit! I pity the people in the center aisle. I'm sure they got a shower.haha
This show was partly autobiographical. With some somber moments when he describes the death of his parents and other family members. But in typical Mario Cantone fashion, in one second, he turned it around and had us rolling in the aisles.
After the show I went down to the village to the Comedy Cellar. NY's oldest comedy club. It's near NYU and the street was completely filled with college kids. I felt like I was 90 years old. I was seated with 5 girls. I was the baby-sitter.
I was alittle star struck when I saw the comedians, most of them are on tv. As they waited to go on stage they sat on a bench right next to me! Seeing an UNcensored standup routine gives you a better feel of who these guys really are.
When it was all over and time to pay the bill, they had included me in with the 5 girls. My portion came out to $26, so I give them $30. After the drunk girls looked over the bill one said "give him the bill he's Asian he's supposed to be good at math". Ok I'll let that one pass...Then she turns to me and tries to use her "charm" to get me to pay more.....eeeeeeh...wrong. Then she goes "Come on Peter (?) I know you're rich why don't you pay for us?" The girl across from me says 'he owes more' That was it. I tossed a couple more bucks in and got up and left. What whores...
Tonight I'm going to a Gay and Lesbian concert band concert. I was torn between that and going to see this hot comic DC Benny because they were at the same time. When I called to make the reservation they said he has 3 shows and the last one is at 12:30. Faaabulous! Now I can go to both.
Tonight's celebrity spotting...Joey Slotnick, he played Jonathan Silverman's neighbor in the series "the single guy". He looked awful....like he'd been drinking for a week straight.
OK,I need to get out of here and get some groceries.
